Tips for Getting in Guide/GuideLive.com

Getting listed in the Friday Guide isn’t rocket science, but there are a number of things to you can do to improve the chances of your information being included.

First, you can submit items to The Dallas Morning News Guide a few ways.

Online — You can go fill out an online submission form by going to dallasnews.com and then to Guidelive. Go to submit events, and fill out the form. Because this is a form letter, there is no need to respond unless you need to make a correction to something you have already submitted to us. Because we receive so many submissions, it is almost impossible for us to send a reply confirming that we received your submission and that we will or won't use.

By Email — Send your press release to guide@dallasnews.com and/or editor@guidelive.com. When submitting information by email, include as many details as you can about the event. Also, please put the date of the event in the subject line. This really helps us prioritize our emails.

By fax — (214) 977-8838

By mail — You can mail information to:

Important information releases and submissions should have:

• A phone number that we can publish in the paper, and that the public can call to ask questions or purchase tickets. (If using a residential phone number, or if using an answering machine, please make sure recording identifies to the caller that it is the right number for the event.)

• The address of the place where your event is being held, (cross streets OK, but, physical address preferred).

• If admission is free, say, "Admission is free."

• The date(s) of your event.

• The time(s) of your event.

• Lots of descriptions/details about the event: Who will perform? What work of art will be shown? What type of activities will be offered?

• If you have advance promotional photos for the event, we would love to receive a copy. Here's what we must have: Photographs of people, places or things, (no logos, no advertisements, no flyers). The format that we can accept is high resolution jpeg at 300 dpi (3" x 4" or larger preferred). The name of the photographer. The names of the subjects in the photo(s).

Other tips that help our staff members:

• In general, we prefer plain text emails. Sometimes attachments are difficult to open; so if possible, submit press release as the plain text email. You can also attach Word document copy with company letterhead.

• If you have a fundamental change that you need to report to us (for example, if main performer for event has canceled), please supplement your email submission with a phone call to the Guide staff immediately.

• The more details you can give us about your event, the better. For example, if your organization is sponsoring a festival, tell us what events will be featured (face painting, bounce house, food, games, etc.). Photos from past events are encouraged, and please include names and photo credits when possible.

• The earlier you submit your items the better. We do the Guide section listings one week in advance because of all the checks we have to make on details like addresses, phone numbers and event times. If you wait to submit an item the week of publication, chances are, the item will not be included. It’s best to get info to us at least 10 days before publication.
